Hawk & Dove #7

Hawk & Dove #7: Hunted

The second to last issue of the Hawk & Dove series (insert sobbing here), and another solo for Rob Liefeld writing & drawing. Also worth noting is the new colorist Andrew James Troy.

As for the usual little previews for this issue–you only get one:

Dawn at a Night Club

This is the only frame that matters.

And now that I’m finished drooling over Dawn from Page 1…let’s continue!

Story

Dawn’s gone crazy after the old break up with Deadman and starts partying it up at the local club scenes. Hank gets dragged along to be her wingman (Ha ha. I love puns, you don’t understand how much I do.) but more ends up her bodyguard when the guys get too fresh. He can’t take watching her like this anymore and drags Dawn out into the alley for a one-on-one intervention.

They argue & have a cute little makeup session before…BAM! Interrupted by our new baddie: The Hunter. He’s out for our Bird-Themed heroes and thus ensues a great fight scene. The Hunter takes a couple souvenirs from our main duo (you have to read it…the one he takes from Hawk is particularly amusing) and the fight is held up by the appearance of newcomer Xyra, and the Hunter leaves.

Turns out there’s a cult that worships hawks and that means Hank, our favorite Hawk, is on their ‘false god’ list. Hank & Dawn team up with Xyra for more information and Hunter retreats to the real big bad who has a bit of a prediction of things to come.

Artwork

Okay, this was the first issue where the art was weak in places. There may have been a cross eyed look here or there and some panels where the coloring seemed a little off with the inking. While most of the book looked great, it was just these few spots that looked slapped together.

I can’t blame them too much, with so many other projects it’d make sense that the canceled series gets the least attention or could hurt motivation. Overall though, these are minor complaints and Liefeld’s art style still holds true and the new colorist did a good job trying to keep the style familiar to previous issues. And hey! We got the pic of Dawn above. That makes up for anything else in the issue. XD (Xyra’s not too bad herself in sweats, either.)

Overall

Good issue and I like where the story is going. I look forward to the last issue and I hope Hawk & Dove gets to go out with a real hitter. Definitely pick this one up if you can. It’s got some good stuff from Dawn & Hank bonding and seeing the stress in their relationship.

Hawk & Dove is still my favorite series of the New DC 52 and I can’t wait for this duo to show up in other titles. :3

Hawk & Dove #4

Dove vs Swan Part 2

We got more of their brawl - and it was awesome.

As always – Spoilers may appear! Read at your own risk, but I’ll try to make them tame. XD

Hawk and Dove #4!

And we’re back with more awesome with Hawk & Dove #4.

It was almost excruciating knowing I had to wait an extra week for it. Especially after having to wait until after I got home to read the issue, but I’ve got it now and it was another good one~

We start out with a good old interrogation of Condor. Dove tries to play ‘Good Cop,’ which works about as well as you think it might. So, Hawk just steps in and plays ‘Bad Cop’ for a while.

Watanabe suggests that it probably won’t work, but Dove is only half listening.

While Hawk beats on Condor, we’re treated to a brief flashback of Dove and Swan’s fight from the last issue. Dove basically beats the living daylights out of Swan and it’s awesome. We also get some references to Dawn’s past life that leave me wanting more info. Of course this leads to…

Swan calling Dove out for fighting back when her avatar is “Peace.” While she’s distracted, Swan stabs her and…something cool happens. I won’t go into too much detail because that would be a spoiler, and also because I’m not sure what happened at the time either. It was a little vague. (But thankfully they DO explain it later–so it makes up for the confusion at the time.)

Watanabe and Dove

Poor Watanabe, that's what I think every time I see him. *pats him*

Moving on, we go back to the interrogation room where Condor starts talking. He manages to confuse talk circles around the uninformed Hawk and Dove.

The issue ends with Condor letting them know that he can sense where Deadman is…who happened to be in the room at the time. Before he could leave, Deadman gets captured in a very cool way–you can read it for yourself–and we leave the issue with Dove vowing that she’d get him back no matter what!

And Hawk got blasted by some goons. Poor Hawk. No, seriously. I know the guy has attitude problems, but it seems like in every version of Hawk & Dove I see he’s always getting wailed on. He’s almost at woobie status by this point. XD

Conclusions

Another great issue. I’m really excited for the saving of Deadman in issue number five & in six we get to see Batman and Robin show up. So…awesome all around.

The artwork continues to be fun as well, and they’re using a lot more of that blur effect. It creates a much softer set of lines & colors than the harsher & distinct sketch lines. Looks pretty good.

There’s one panel in particular where Deadman is getting pulled away that’s gorgeous. Wish I could link it, but it’s pretty spoiler heavy. Sorry! XD

And we’ll end with one of my fav non-spoiler shots from the comic:

Dove, Condor and Hawk

Don't worry Hank, we don't know what he's talking about, either.

Liliy is a Fangirl #13

To be fair, I put the fangirl post off this week because I knew I would be able to wait a week to fangirl over the movie I was seeing (saw) Saturday.

The Muppets

This movie, The Muppets 2011. Was. Amazing.

No, I loved it. I laughed the entire movie. I loved every cheesy, lampshade hanging, wonderfully timed moment.

And the music was great, too. A whole new set of songs that get stuck in your head and they were all up there with the original Muppet Movie. “Pictures in my Head” and “Party of One” were a couple of my favorites. (My brother’s was unanimously “Muppet of a Man”).

If you like The Muppets – you should see this. That is all. :)

Comics

Okay, so I’m trying to trim down my comics budget. By doing that, I’m going to put myself a month behind on at least one week’s worth of comics so they’re a $1 less each. If I was smart, I would have chosen the week before since that’s the one where I order the most comics, but…I want to read those the second they come out. I’ve just admitted this last week is the one I care the least about. XD So there we go.

However! For Black Friday they did have a ‘Blackest Night’ sale, so I grabbed the Teen Titan 3 Issue Mini Series.

For yes–Hawk and Dove.

I’m happy I don’t know more of the issues they’re in, or I would have hunted down all of them.

Oh well, at least I got to see Dove get mad, and I saw Holly Granger as Hawk for the first time. I like her–she’s basically a female Hank. XD

Also, we got a quick sneak at Don, the original Dove. All this has confirmed is I love all four Hawk & Dove. I think perfection would be Hank & Dawn, and Holly & Don. That would be awesome.

Hawk and Dove

I love them. All of them.

…I love Hawk & Dove.

*runs away*
