@ Azrael: Well, you can’t choose a knife, that was Grace’s weapon of choice. I would suggest starting to think with one-handed weapons, but, honestly, I suspect you might get messed up your muscle memory if you tried that. Personally, I like the thought of Katar (punch dagger), particularly ones that have a Pata’s (gaunlet-sword) Gaunlet to protect the hand.

That said, for practicality, even a firefighting axe has a shocking amount of combat & non-combat utility. Ignoring the axe blade, a lot of them have a spike on the back that’s could penetrate armour easily, and if the back’s flat it can work as a hammer easily, as well.

If you want a pure weapon, Polearms were, historically, the dominant force of melee military combat for a reason, though length could be a problem once you get indoors.

If you’re preparing specifically to fight Wiglaf, a Mace would probably be my suggestion. Mace’s work similarly to bullets by impacting high force into small area. The difference being that bullets have nearly no mass, and thus lose their force rapidly, while mace’s force notably comes from the mass, and thus loses it slowly. This means that a mace would essentially ignore Wiglaf’s chain-mail armour… if you have sufficient skill to hit him with it.
