NeoOffice & Furigana

Since I’ve yet to get an updated copy of Microsoft Word, and my old copy hates my new Intel Processor – I’ve downloaded the free NeoOffice. Now, I’ve actually been quite happy with the program. It works as well, if not better, than word – it has a nice layout, and it does the things I tell it too.

Well, today I discovered something really awesome about the program that I’d been having issues with in word – it has an “Asian Phonetic Guide” feature that lets you easily add Rubi/Furigana to the kanji. It’s amazing and I love it to bits. And just because it is so cool – here’s a screenshot of it in action!

    That’s really cool; now I’m curious if the Windows version of OpenOffice has that feature as well. Not that it would be terribly useful for me, what with my barely rudimentary grasp of the Japanese language. ^_^”

    OpenOfice version 2+ is really nice. Writer and Calc are pretty much on-par with the Office 2003 versions of Word and Excel, and Impress (OpenOffice’s version of PowerPoint) is good for the price, though not quite on par with PowerPoint. I’d been using the OpenOffice suite for about a year or two until I got my hands on Office 2007 about a month ago. The new Office 2007 ribbon interface is pretty awesome.

    You can’t beat the price, though. If I hadn’t gotten Office 2007 for free, I’d definitely still be using OpenOffice.

    OpenOffice is a great piece of software, though. For absolutely nothing you get an office suite that’s pretty much on-par with Office 2003. I’d definitely still be using it if I hadn’t gotten’ my hands on a copy of Office 2007.

    OpenOffice is a really nice suite, easily comparable to Microsoft Office 2003. Impress (the PowerPoint equivalent) is a bit lacking, but you really can’t beat the price. I’d still be using it if I hadn’t gotten my hands on Office 2007. ^_^
