Love WP 2.8

Wordpress 2.8 Baker was released.

It is a beautiful thing. They took the amazing update that was 2.7 and smoothed it out into a slick, functioning beauty.

I love that I can tell it how many items to show on my categorie/post lists. And well, just the overall feel is nicer. Doesn’t look much different, but you can feel it.

Feel it.

Everyone should update.

Bad Mood

I hate Windows.

I hate it. I hate it. I hate it.

If you read my previous post, you know that today I was in a great mood. Woke up early, had breakfast with the folks. Went to a convention with my brother and raked in the goodies like Salty Dog V & IV and a Gin figurine.

The day continued to get better (the stuff that happened after that post) when I came home from the con and watched Red vs Blue: Reconstruction with my brother. Which was amazing. It made me laugh and finally bite the bullet and order the Red vs Blue Box Set for the first 5 seasons of DVDs. I was on top of the world in giddiness from seeing new footage of my one true love Sarge (Red Team FTW). My only disappointment was that Donut didn’t make an apperance – but since it looks like Reconsruction will be getting another season I have hope.

At this point, I rewatched House Season 5, Episode 4 for the tenth or so time. (Wilson takes House to his father’s funeral in case you forgot.) And the good mood just kept on going up.

It was at this point that things settled down and I opened Photoshop to draw tomorrow’s WAM while my brother hooked up his XBOX360 to the internet to log-in to his live account. (He couldn’t before b/c 1) I didn’t have internet in my room where the unit is and 2) Xbox suffered red ring of doom before he could set up his account on the machine.) He filled in his gamertag and got all ready to log-on.

Only it wouldn’t accept his e-mail or password.

This caused me a bit of ‘huh?’ because I clealry remember registering him earlier in the summer. Long story short, I spent a little over an hour trying every e-mail/password combination under the sun between both of our accounts to figure out what account was using his gamertag. None of them worked. And it wouldn’t even recognize his e-mail as having an account (which I know it did) so we couldn’t even have our password e-mailed to us. Maybe I’m crazy and didn’t actually register it. But that’s impossible b/c I can see the gamercard with the gamertag I registered in the summer and *breathes*

Needless to say, I’m in a bad mood and ranting about it on the computer seems to be helping. However, facts are facts and we had to reregister at Windows/XBOX/Whatever Live and he now has a new gamertag.

So now I’m trying to draw WAM and hopefully have come up with something acceptable. Because quite franky, I nearly said ’screw it’ and posted nothing b/c I was so angry. I’ve calmed down a little bit since then and decided that it wasn’t fair to my readers to take out the frustration on them. I’m making them read this post instead. So there.

In conclusion: I hate you XBOX Live. Thank-you.

At least Izuru’s finally happy to have his Captain back.

Kotoba – Best Flashcards Ever

Kotoba is a simple flashcard program designed to help the user learn Japanese by running through vocabulary that you set up in the lexicon/dictionary. It’s really easy – set up your dictionary with your own set of vocabulary (Or download one from their site that others have submitted. I used the professioncy test as a base and have been adding words as I think of them, personally.) and then press play. It’ll just start running flipping through each word first showing the Kanji, then it’s phoenetic spelling using kana, and finally the English translation.

Why so serious? Learning Words is Fun!

Why so serious? Learning Words is Fun!

As you can see above, I can just leave it running on my dual monitor. It’s a way to work without really working. ^^ Just the repetition of seeing and reading the words every once in a while is good to boost memory. It’s almost subconcious and also sort of works as a screensaver when my second monitor is just sitting there doing nothing…heh.

And as you can see, the Dictionary is easy to edit and maintain as well. Just click ‘Add’ and fill in the blanks. -Which also means that you can use any language you want! You could write in spanish and then fill in the translation leaving the ‘kana’ section blank. Kotoba works exactly the same way no matter what you fill in the blanks. ^_^ You could probably use it for just about anything that requires flashcards.

Sadly, this program is Mac-only. While normally that would have me shouting for joy – I’d love to have this program at work which is Windows Only. So, if any of you happen to spot a Windows equivelent please drop me a line! :D

P.S. This is my first post using the absolutley awesome Wordpress 2.7 Beta 2. It’s so awesome. *_*

Trashing Files on Accident Bites

For some strange reason, I tossed my ‘Images’ Folder into the trash and deleted it. If I hadn’t had an image open at the time I probably wouldn’t have even noticed I had thrown the folder away. *shrugs*

On the one hand I’m really annoyed because I had screen shots and the like (along with all the images Mike sent me of that one show that I can’t remember the title of) as well as some HQ downloads. It’s nothing I can’t get again; but I can’t remember for the life of me what images were actually in the folder.

*sigh* I know the importance of backing up but I don’t have another external harddrive yet (Poor TIme Machine isn’t getting used…this could have all been avoided. *_*) and Back-Up software is expensive. I’m better off paying $100 on a new external harddrive to use Time Machine than buying some of that stuff.

Ah well; Mini rant because I could have been in bed instead of searching google for a quick way to recover those files. I guess I’ll just have to re-download them later. *sigh* At least it was nothing too important.

Still a pain. End of Rant.

Autocad is…

AutocadĀ  is Illustrator on Crack.

This has become my new favorite phrase as of late. I spent about 3-4 hours yesterday getting trained in the basics of Autocad at work and today I spent 8 hours cleaning building diagrams in said program. (Did I mention I’m an administrative assistant?)

Anyway, it’s a decent enough program – the input system is horrid and archaic, but it does allow you to control all the widths and use measurements that you could probably do in Illustrator but with much more headaches.

In either case, apparently I’m picking it up quickly. Hurrah. But I swear that hidden files that I can’t see even when the layer is ‘on’ are going to be the death of me. They’re so evil. *_*

And Sweeny Todd is addictive.

In other news, I’ve been listening to the Sweeny Todd movie soundtrack on loop since I first saw the movie. It’s sooo wonderful. Go buy it. It’s worth it.

InDesign My Love

It’s ironic, despite the fact I use Photoshop the most out of the Adobe Suites, I think my all-time favorite Adobe product is InDesign. It’s such a wonderful program for page layout and I adore it to bits and pieces.

I think my love of typography and books is showing…again ironic considering that I own more books than I read. They’re just such gorgeous things that I can’t help but love them. Which would make sense why I love a program that sets them up….along with literature.

Badly designed campaign literature makes me cry.

Point of edit – InDesign rules. Long live page layout programs that aren’t PageMaker. *shivers*

NeoOffice & Furigana

Since I’ve yet to get an updated copy of Microsoft Word, and my old copy hates my new Intel Processor – I’ve downloaded the free NeoOffice. Now, I’ve actually been quite happy with the program. It works as well, if not better, than word – it has a nice layout, and it does the things I tell it too.

Well, today I discovered something really awesome about the program that I’d been having issues with in word – it has an “Asian Phonetic Guide” feature that lets you easily add Rubi/Furigana to the kanji. It’s amazing and I love it to bits. And just because it is so cool – here’s a screenshot of it in action!

VLC is LOVE

For the longest time, I have been plagued (like most of the Mac community) by the WMV3 codec embeded into a .avi container. These movie files would not play no matter what I tried or what I downloaded. It was frustrating to say the least.

But now – as I have downloaded the latest nightly build of VLC by Videolan, I can say it – it worked. That blessed, blessed free program played my files. I’m so happy.

Love them.
