Liliy is a Fangirl #12

…I did other things this week like movies and tv shows, but they were all kinda’ drowned out by DC’s comics this week. XD So without further ado~

(and you know this by now but — spoilers may appear!)

Comics

Batman #3 : Some dude really likes owls. XD I’d say more, but that’s really the gist of what I got from this issue…heh.

Mr. Tycho from Supergirl

Let him be a full time villain. Let him be a full time villain.

Supergirl #3 :  Let Mr. Tycho be a full time villain. Please, please, please, please DC don’t let him be a one shot intro villain. I’m begging.

I love him already.

I don’t know why, but he’s handsome, suave, has a secretary and I really hope he turns out to be Supergirl’s personal Lex Luthor.

Speaking, Supergirl is still rocking. I’m not usually for the slow burn, but with such gorgeous artwork, it happens to work for this series better than you’d expect. Loving it.

And let Mr. Tycho be a full time villain, please.

Catwoman Issue 3

She's awesome.

Catwoman #3 : Man this was a good issue. It had it all: powerful action, a great bad guy and some really moving scenes on Selina’s part.

I’ve noticed people complaining Selina’s been really reckless lately, and not as well planned out as more modern versions–but wasn’t that the point of the reboot? To take her back to a younger, less experienced Catwoman?

She’s still learning, and she’s finally realizing her behavior has consequences. That’s the part of the story that’s engaging and I’m really glad we get to see it here with the Lola storyline.

Also, Batman & Catwoman’s relationship is getting more defined and I love that all over the place.

Nightwing #3 :  This might honestly be the first series I drop from the DC line. XD I am really having a hard time caring about Dick Grayson and his problems. It’s not that it’s poorly written or anything, I just don’t think I’m a huge Grayson fan. I didn’t really start liking the Robins until Tim got to the scene (The Jason/Tim hybrid on B:TAS), and then fell in love with Comic Tim Drake & Jason Todd in Under The Red Hood. I don’t think I started liking Dick until he was Batman and teamed up with Damian…so. Yeah. Having trouble with this one. XD

Wonder Woman in Justice League #3

She won me over with 'Harpy'

Justice League #3 : Wow. XD I might actually like Wonder Woman for a change.  She was awesome.

I’m not even joking. There was something so great about her wandering around, not having a clue about anything, while Steve tried to track her down.

It’s fun and adds to the humor that Justice League has had building through this entire ‘here comes Darkseid’ thing. Plus, Green Lantern called ‘Dibs’ and that’s hilarious all by itself. Loving Justice League. It’s almost worth that extra dollar they’re charging. (But it still hurts.)

And for the record – I like the bloomers. I hope Diana never gets pants. *sits strongly in the short-shorts camp*

Red Hood and the Outlaws #3 : All the haters of Red Hood and the Outlaws? Read this issue. Now. I’ll sum up my thoughts by this:

Kori: Girl, you scary. o_O

Roy: You sweet, idiotic lug head…stop making Killer Croc weird…heh.

Jason: I’m going to beat you over the head. YOU GO GET THAT MEMORY BACK RIGHT NOW! *fumes*

Sorry. XD My favorite part about Jason Todd has always been his daddy issues. No question.

Still, the last scene of Red Hood and the Outlaws is as moving as the last scene in Under the Red Hood.

Look at it:

Jason and Bruce

Perfect Family Moment

Nothing more needs to be said.

Liliy is an Author #2

Today’s post is brought to you by “Exact Change.” Why? Because I paid for my Taco Bell lunch with it today, and I honestly can’t remember the last time I paid with exact change for…anything. It was quite satisfying, even if I had to dig out four pennies.

NaNoWriMo/Nonnative Ice

Trying to break through the 30k mark–I’m at 28,100 and coming along slowly. The novel’s hit that point to where it’s become a chore, and while killing someone off got me another 2,000 words, it’s slowing down again. Ah well, I suppose I’ll keep on truckin’ and get those words in…and see what shows up at the end. I might be able to save half of it. Hopefully.

Children of Hephaestus

So, finally sucked it up and decided to start following some common advice I’ve seen around the writer’s blog & spheres: I printed a copy of the book on paper, and am currently reading it out loud–with a pen in my hand.

It…is surprisingly effective. It’s sort of like that mirror trick in art–flip your canvas horizontally and suddenly all of those anatomy mistakes are glaringly obvious where you had overlooked them before–it makes sense in your head but you don’t quite believe it.

Until it works. I throw my hands up and admit it: Reading aloud, on a different medium–it works.

It’s just slow. I’ve spent about an hour a chapter, and I’m only on the third one in the book. Very time consuming, but the effort should prove to be worth it.

Children of Hephaestus 2: Jupiter

Title still pending–and the word count is actually somewhere around 6,000 as of last night. I overestimated on the last post (which has since been corrected). I’m really excited about this one–I’ve already had some discussions with my editor to help keep continuity straight with the first book, and I’ve established my second plot thread.

My goal is to have the bulk of this book written by the time it’s predecessor goes into print, and now that I’m no longer ripping my hair out for the background plot, I think things are going to go much more smoothly.

Author Blog

I’ve decided if I don’t have a tool to share–I’ll share an author’s blog I’ve been reading! :D First up:

Jody Hedlund. I’ve been following Ms. Hedlund on Twitter for a while now, and enjoying her blog quite a bit. She updates regularly and usually has some good, quick advice for the aspiring writer. I also got a chance to read The Preacher’s Bride by her, and it was pretty good. So, check her out if you’ve got a moment. :D

Liliy is a Fangirl #11

And we’re back again – that lovely post of the week. On time. Hurrah! So let’s get this party started~

Anime

Midori Days: I made it through one episode–and it was hilarious. I need time to sit down and watch the rest of the 12 episodes in a row. Who would have thought a girl stuck on a punk’s right hand could be so cute? (Don’t ask – just watch it.)

Cartoons

Adventure Time: Okay–that episode with Susan? Where Finn had his cap off and we saw his new shorter hair cut? Super cute. But not as cute as when Finn felt under Susan’s hat at the end of the episode. So. Cute.

Why aren’t you watching Adventure Time?

Green Lantern: So, the new 3D animated series arrived to Cartoon Network today, and I ended up catching the second half. What I saw wasn’t bad, actually. And I LOVE Razor. He’s just so cute and full of angst. *pinches his little cheeks*

Comics

In addition to my two regular pick-ups for Week 2, I’ve also been slowly collecting the 2010 Birds of Prey series (Hawk & Dove obsession continuing.) Since it’s only like 15 issues, I’m just going to wait until the end and give it its own blog post.

Moving on. XD

Cristoph and Slade training.

Have I mentioned how much I love Cristoph? Because seriously. How can you not love a guy who just chills with Slade while he's workin' out?

Deathstroke #3: Definitely made up for Issue #2’s bore-fest. Not only did we get a lot of action with our new purple-themed villain…whose name I can’t recall, but that’s not the point. He’s purple and teal and huge. XD

We got to see a new guy named Peabody whose pretty cool in his own right–builds equipment, awesome. [“Precision.” -Peabody] And Slade’s off on a reputation building binge. Not to sure how I like it, but I can work with it because Cristoph and Peabody are cool. And you know, it’s Slade. I’m sorry, but if the Teen Titans cartoon did anything for me, it was make me a HUGE fan of Slade Wilson. Which is also why I never refer to him as Deathstroke.

But as for the issue, they tied the story back to Issue #1 which was actually pretty cool & a neat twist. Definitely helps remove the ‘it’s just Slade fighting’ vibe.

Also, there’s this:

Slade, Cristoph, and Peabody

Who says only the guys get the fan service in DC comics? They're clearly not looking at what I am. Now excuse me while I drool over men probably well over twice my age. Curse you comics. Curse you!

But, this week wasn’t all about Slade and his sexy, sexy-ness–we also have more Teenage excitement!

Cute Superboy

I think this is the definition of "Adorkable"

Superboy #3: This was a fun issue. We’re getting a bit of dumb, dorky Superboy and it’s great. He’s so cute and clueless and he finally feels more like Superboy.

His first foray into the outside world went well, I think–and it’s getting a little more clear how he goes from jail duty to fighting and running into the Teen Titans in a couple weeks.

Though the stuff with Red threw me, I’ll admit that. This probably has to do with the fact I had no idea Red existed as a character in the DC universe outside of Superboy until I saw an off hand question in an interview if she still had her powers. Well, she apparently still has them–if they resemble what she had before, I don’t know. So I guess I get to learn as I go along.

Also, Red & Rose hangin’ out is awesome. They need to sit back and snark far more often.

…now if you’ll excuse, l’m going to go stare at that clip of Slade, Cristoph and Peabody and their suggestive-when-out-of-context dialogue. :D

Liliy is an Author #1

So, while I was waiting for lunch to arrive today, as I worked on my lovely CAD drawings (while listening to the Portal 2 soundtrack–this is important as the music is amazing~), contemplating yet again why Architectural and MEP firms seem to despise each other and take it out on each other via transmitted drawing files we must share, I realized that, despite a recent change in attitude to take my writing more seriously, I need to be held more accountable before I fall into old habits, and my inner writing fire dwindles down to cinders.

If you know me personally you know that I have a difficult time…finishing things (the four or five last novel attempts that are sitting unfinished on my hard drive and the latch hook rug with everything finished but the last three lines can attest). One of the reasons my online comic WaM has done so well (four years of regular tri-weekly updates!) is that people comment every day and well–fans get angry when you don’t deliver. I have a set deadline come hell or high water, good or bad, three times a week or I stand to lose a chunk of my audience.

Books, don’t work like this–it can take months to write the first draft, and years to finish editing. So, while I could go serial and post it chapter by chapter (like I do when I write fanfiction) for the instant gratification, there’s a lack of quality and that complete picture that I want. With WaM, it’s fine if I make things up as I go along–it’s fun–but you tend to lack the joy of an early set-up or that little clue that leads to a smack-in-the-face-realization later that just creates that ‘awe’ moment (you know the one) that makes you go back and re-read to see all the clues you missed the first time.

(Sort of like when you finish watching FLCL and realize just how much work went into that crazy series & watch it another six times to get it.)

So, like my “Liliy is a Fangirl” segments (that I started to force regular updating to this blog), I’ve decided to start posting on Tuesday’s during my lunch break to give a status update to what I’ve worked on, what I’m planning, and just list some fun author-related things. It’ll be a nice way to watch my progress and to remind me that if I don’t get off my tail and start working, I won’t have anything to post about–and that just won’t do.

As for why I’m calling the segment “Liliy is an Author”: it gives some uniformity to “Liliy is a Fangirl” –that’s why. :D

Without further ado – let’s get started with Liliy is a Fangirl #1!

NaNoWriMo/Nonnative Ice

I owe a lot to NaNoWriMo–if not for participating last year, I wouldn’t have a finished draft for the first time in my life. Naturally, I decided to participate again this year!

As of right now I’m almost 15,000 words into my first dive into Sci-Fi, “Nonnative Ice.” And honestly–the book’s a bit of a train wreck. This was my first attempt at outlining a novel before I started – characters, settings, plot…all that good stuff. By the second chapter the book decided that wasn’t good enough and quite literally threw the outline out the window. Currently, I’m modifying my outline as I go to hopefully keep things on track to finish the draft by December–even if it is a bit everywhere drawing from two separate story lines at the moment.

Not to say it’s not salvageable, but I still have quite a way to go before taking the red pen to paper and reworking it.

Children of Hephaestus

I’ve been working on this since NaNoWriMo 2010 & if you follow my Twitter or see me on Ustream, you know that the first draft mark-ups from my (read: amazing) editor are complete. (Insert: Yay!).

So, it’s on hold while I work on NaNoWriMo to give me a good chance to clear my head before I take one last look at the draft. As soon as that’s completed, I can declare it a proper Draft 2 and return it to my lovely Editor.

But the true reason it’s on hold is that I’m in the market for a good b&w laser printer, so I can start looking at some of this stuff on paper. Hopefully I will own one before November is out so I can get crackin’ and print that bad boy out.

Children of Hephaestus 2

I figured out sometime at the end of book one, that I want CoH to be a series. There’s just too much I want to get in that won’t fit in a single book (it could, but then we’d have something the length of IT and I’m not sure that’s wise for a first novel…). If all works out, there should be 3-4 books connected, but (more or less) self-contained novels.

The second book, which I’m about 10,000 4,000 [Edit: Sorry! I way overestimated how many words I had written. Heh.] words in (I started it just before NaNo, so it got put on hold for a bit), is turning out nicely. I have an outline set that works its way into a third book, and a good grasp on my new protagonist. The goal is to have the first draft done by the time Children of Hephaestus goes into print (yes, self-publishing–we’ll cover that another day) so there isn’t too much time between books.

The title is currently pending, but I’m thinking of “Jupiter Rising” or “Logan’s Jupiter.”

Featured Tool

Scrivener. I can not even begin to express how much I love this writing software. It’s organized, it breaks the writing up into manageable chunks, and it syncs with Dropbox so I can work on it no matter where I am.

I love it so much, I want to buy a lap top so I can keep Scrivener with me wherever I write–I’m looking at you saving-up-for-Christmas money.

But, there are plenty of people out there with blogs and the like praising Scrivener, you don’t need me to go into details. But I will recommend it 100% and it’s worth every single penny you pay for it.

NekoCon 2011 – 14th Convention!

It’s thattime again! Another year, another Nekocon, another convention rundown~

And just to get this out of the way: if you called out to me (recognizing the Sally costume I told you about) and I kept walking – my bad. I have serious tunnel vision at stuff like this and tend to block out everything but my destination or the person I was talking to–which would likely have been my brother. XD There is a very good chance I did not hear you at all. Heh.

Cosplay

This year I went all out and dressed up as Sally Jupiter, aka The Silk Spectre, from The Watchmen.

I think it turned out pretty well, if you ask me.

And I also think this is the first time I’ve dressed up at a convention that I was stopped for photos like every ten feet. On the one hand – flattering to know I got the look right and that there are other Sally fans out there! (I hope that was the main reason…though at least two got my picture because I was “Liliy of WaM” – which still isn’t completely setting in. XD *almost weirded out has fans*)

The other hand: I sort of have no idea where all those photos are going to end up (yes I know — the internet — but where and for what!). I’m still sort of uncomfortable having my picture on the internet…but either way, too late to worry about it now….

Friday

Friday was fun. Hung out with ArionWind running around the Dealer’s room and bought some figures before watching a panel on character creation. Also made sure to stop by and say hi to Erin and Chez at the Tamuran table. Didn’t stay long though ’cause they were busy at work. :D

Saturday

This was hang out with my brother day~ We went to the AMV competition before running around Artist Alley and the Dealer’s room. We got lunch at Taco Bell & made it back in time to watch The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya which is still an amazing movie. I recommend everyone see it (assuming you’ve seen the anime – watch that first or the movie might not make sense. XD)

And Saturday is where my con time ended. We ended up doing family stuff all day on Sunday so no last minute visit. ^^;

The Haul

Dark Magician

He's adorable. <3

I have always had it really bad for the Dark Magician – you have no idea. XD Loved him. LOVED HIM. So anyway, bought a ton of YuGiOh Coin figures, but am not posting all the photos because I haven’t taken them all out of their boxes yet to display. Need to rearrange some stuff to make them fit…so you just get my fav instead. :3

Misato Katsuragi

She's still the hottest female ever.

And my Misato Katsuragi collection grows! :D This year’s addition is thanks to ArionWind who got it for me as a gift. :D He didn’t have to, but I’ll accept it for now. So Thank you, AW!

But no, seriously, I have it really bad for Misato. >.> It may be unhealthy. This is figure #4 and I have no intention of stopping….this is why I limit myself to one Misato per con. XD

Midori Days

Impulse purchase...not!

Midori Days is one of those titles where I looked at the premise and went “That’s not suggestive…” in all its glorious sarcasm. But it’s one of those series where after I saw the first trailer (years ago) I went “I sort of want to watch that.” but never did anything about it. It was always just sort of there….asking to be watched.

So I finally caved and bought it when I noticed it was a ‘complete collection’ and well, bought it. I hope to watch it soon. XD

Tamuran

Issue #1 was lonely.

I think it should have been obvious I’d be walking out of the con with these. :P Long-form comics are SO much more satisfying in chapters/volumes vs one at a time. XD

Supergirl and Streaky

Supergirl and Streaky

This is probably the true impulse purchase of the evening. I had been admiring (read: Drooling) over the DC/Marvel Bishoujo figures on sale in the dealer’s room, but sort of winced at the price tag. Well…

My bro bought a ‘Cheetah’ AmeComi figure, and the lady said “It’s buy one, get one half off” in which case I went “SUPER GIRL NAOW.”

In that tone of voice.

No, I am not experiencing Supergirl Fangirlisms thanks to the new Supergirl comic from the DC 52 reboot.

So there you have it. :D We got two figures for the price of one! (Well, a slightly more expensive one, but shut up.)

Conclusion

Another fun convention! Now to figure out if I’m going to Katsucon or not. XD

Supergirl close up

She's so pretty.... *sigh*

…I’m done now.
