Fangirl #19 – Mixed Bag

Bit of a mix this week as I’m banning myself from buying any new comics until I get my second draft to an editor…

Didn’t stop me from procrastinating in other ways! :D And you’ll see my new format–disorganization away! :D Bold Title..then what I think about it–go!

My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic

I am totally all over the blind bags being on sale. Iv’e gone a little nuts with them. (They are so cute.) Thankfully, by bag 16 or so, I had a Rarity, an Applejack and a Fluttershy–so for the most part, now they’re just ‘I see it so I support it’ sort of buys. XD

But speaking of the cartoon–Today’s episode? Applejacks’ episode, “The Last Roundup” –man was that a great episode. I know everyone’s going crazy about the Derpy thing (I too almost did a spit take hearing that was made canon), but I really liked the main Applejack story, too. Those bits on the cherry farm were hilarious.

And you know, Applejack is great.

Hetalia: Season 3

Man I love this show. So glad I pre-ordered the DVDs from Funimation. *hugs them* I watched the entire third season in a row…and then realized there was a fourth one. *didn’t realize that all of World Series was two seasons, not one*

Love that stuff. And I do like the English dub–it’s funny in a different way from the original dialogue so it’s like getting two great shows in one! :D

Beelzebub

This is one of those series where I wait a few months and just catch up with a bunch of episodes at once. (Like right now).

It’s still funny, and Furuichi is getting a lot of screen time in the 40’s–which is amazing. (He is my favorite character. <3)

The only downfall is it makes me want to break out my Yu Yu Hakusho DVDs. XD

Anime in General

Seriously. If you like anime and don’t have an account at Funimation or Crunchyroll or both–you’re missing out. They’ve pretty much made fan subs obsolete AND you get to support all your favorite shows. Do this. If you support them, maybe they’ll get their hands on all the great ADV & Bandai shows that aren’t around anymore. T_T

Deathstroke #5

Cristoph got a decent send off, and that’s all I can ask for. *sniff* Good issue.

Comics in General

It is the year of the Liefeld for me–discovered him with Hawk & Dove, and now he’s everywhere. Not a bad thing–he’s taking over for Deathstroke (I read that anyway), and I’m gaining interest in Hawkman now that he’s taking over for that. Should be fun. :D

Random:

Also–I can’t wait for my Transformers Prime Season 1 box set to show up. But that’s in march.

Author #10 – Self-Editing is Heck

Somewhere, someone is looking at my title and going “Well, duh. What did you expect, idiot?”

To them I reply…nothing. There’s no come back that won’t make me sound like a dork. (Which I am, but I digress.)

The point! I have learned quite a bit about myself and my self-editing style during this first novel experience–in particular, I still have no grasp on properly extrapolating how long it’ll take me to finish editing–as my (saint of an) editor has heard with “You’ll get it tomorrow…maybe the day after…” at least once every day the past…week?

There’s a reason this bugs me. I’m usually pretty good at figuring out how long it’s going to take me to do something whether it’s my CAD work or anything else–

With my comic–I can say without a doubt that I can plot, sketch, ink, color, shade, highlight & letter a complete WaM strip in 2 to 5 hours depending on the complexity and how badly I’m abusing copy-paste that day. Folks who tune into my streaming sessions will vouch that this is true as I’ve been consistently drawing WaM’s individual strips in 2 to 5 hours three times a week for like six years. I got that down.

Writing? I can knock out 1500-5000 words in an hour (assuming that’s all I’m doing). I know that.

Editing? Man is that a monster rearing its ugly head I’ve never met before. Reading out loud–I might manage to get a few pages every ten minutes with mark ups, but even that varies depending on the page. When I finally gave up on reading out loud and just read on paper (still caught a ton of stuff by the way) to try and meet my ever pushed forward deadline–I still only cut that time down by maybe a third. It’s ridiculous, and I’m sure authors everywhere are just shaking their heads as this is probably the norm.

The worst part? While I finished the hand-written mark-ups, I find myself re-editing what I edited when I transfer it over to the typed copy which takes even more time I hadn’t factored into the schedule. Scrivener (I love this software), color codes my revision edits–so I’ll notice a huge chunk that hasn’t changed since draft one and go “…that can’t be perfect” and re-read it again–BAM! I’m fixing things again and my hand-written mark ups get further and further from being transferred over.

On the one hand? The writing is turning out for the better because of the slow going. I got an unexpected text from my editor seeing a sample of my edits and said my work improved “8 fold” — that’s a big deal. So, in the long run, this is for the best for the readers and my novel–in the short run, I’m ripping my hair out because I lack patience and this is taking for–e–ver.

To top it all off? Somewhere lingering with about 100 pages of mark-ups left (out of 300)–I went: “My first chapter is weak and it needs fixing–it doesn’t even match the format of the rest of the book! Oh, ouch, the characterizations are horrible, too! He’d never say that… Why don’t I have many edits here…oh yes. It’s not even remotely salvageable and I just kept putting it off”

. So, last night I scrapped 80% of the first chapter of Children of Hephaestus and rewrote–I plan to edit what I re-wrote today. (It is soooo much better now. What on earth was I thinking before, am I right?)

The point of this entire post is that I’m still editing about two days after my original deadline (two weeks if we’re counting that original December 31st deadline), and I’ve learned to start adding about two weeks to when I think I’m going to be done as a buffer before I tell my editor when she’s getting something.

You know, like the rest of the known world when they’re setting deadlines. :D

Fangirl #18 – TF Prime is Awesome

I’ve been so busy editing, I haven’t had time for much fan action lately. But I did sneak in one movie during my editing spree:

Transfomers Prime: Darkness Rising

I ordered the box set for Transformers Prime a while ago, but it hasn’t arrived yet. So when I saw Darkness Rising at Wal-Mart for cheap, I figured “why not?”

It’s the 5 episode mini-series packaged together as a movie and It. Is. Awesome. Seriously, I loved this thing. It was everything I loved about Transformers G1 and Animated mixed together. This series gets way too much hate from the Pony crowd. It’s good–really, really good.

Plus, the voice acting is superb. Cullen is back as Prime, and Welker as Megatron. That can’t go wrong no matter how you shake it. The star player so far? Steve Blum as Starscream. That’s right–Roger Smith aka Spike Spiegal aka Kazuma in S-CRY-D as Star-freaking-scream.

And it works.

I had to see it to believe it. And man does it work.

Anyway. Love it, and I can’t wait to get my season 1 box set so I can drool over Knock Out and Breakdown, too.

Oh, I only have one issue with the series–that blue motorcycle? I call her Chromia in my head. Don’t get me wrong, I love her character. She’s awesome. She’s kick-ass. I pair her with Jack like you wouldn’t believe. But she’s not Arcee. Not my G1 Arcee, anyway. Not even the Animated one. No–that chick is Chromia. *stands firm*

Comics

I’m really behind on my comics. I think I’ve bought them but haven’t gotten around to reading them. I may or may not mention them unless they really wow me. XD

But there’s only one fangirl bit from me that I’m repeating from a plea over at WaM word for word:

DC canceled Hawk and Dove — the 8th issue will be its last. This makes Liliy very upset. Very, very, upset. Show DC we still want to see them! (Okay me, but I’m already buying their comics and it hasn’t done anything!) If it even looks remotely interesting, and you read comics anyway, buy an issue. Please? *holds hands clasped up in front of her* I hate to play this game with my readers, but I really don’t want Hawk & Dove to go away. XD

The 1980’s series first five comics & the 2011 reboot are both on Comixlogy for $1.99 an issue!!  …at the very least maybe Comixology & DC will post the rest of the old series if those sell well enough up to the cancelation.

End message.

Now for the more fangirl version:

THEY CANCELED HAWK AND DOVE! WHY!!!?? WHY DC, WHY!?

I’m good now.

They also canceled Static Shock, which is also as disappointing. I can see why though, the current storyline is confusing and I’m not getting into it no matter how much I like the characters. I was even getting attached to his sisters even though I had no idea what was going on. Honestly, I was hoping for the series to get past this arc and then things would look up, but I guess it won’t get that chance.

I bet Static gets shipped over to Teen Titans again. XD

Author #9 – Deadlines and Debates

Hello again! You’ve noticed I’ve stopped calling these ‘Liliy is a blank’ – why? Now that I’ve got links to these ‘series’ up top…it seemed redundant. XD I’m still keeping the Author #X though…ha ha. For me.

It’s crunch time this week (much to the dismay of my WaM fans…) and it’s time to put the stone to the grind, and the pedal to the metal, and all that jazz. (To quote Peggy Hill: “Oh yeah!”)

Children of Hephaestus

I originally made my (new) goal for finishing the 2nd draft edit for the 14th, but my editor has expressed if I could get it to her a little earlier, it’d be more convenient due to some free time that’s appeared. She said not to push myself, but since I’ve already missed my original deadline for December 31st, I’m going to try and push to get this done by the 11th. That way, I have the 12th to transfer mark-ups to Scrivener, which means my editor should have it by the 13th…

Here’s to making that happen. *cheers with a cup of Mountain Dew*

The Candlemaker’s Merman

Ironically, in my attempts to do some editing last night for CoH, I ended up writing 1500 words for this instead. So, productivity from my procrastination! At least it was that instead of getting lost in Skyrim again… In any case, Book 2 is now halfway done with it’s raw draft, and things are looking up.

I think I’m going to try and push out four or five books before going back to edit the first one. That way, by book five I’ll have enough of a grasp on my characters that I can analyze them a tad better in the first two books. One character in particular is turning out completely different from what I first envisioned for him, so I want to see where that goes.

Random: Having your keyboard sit on an uneven surface is really annoying when it’s rattling back and forth in a teeter-totter motion.

Still enjoying the series though and I can’t wait to share it with you! :D

Author Blog

Today’s recommendation? Mike Duran. I think I discovered Mike while looking up Christian Horror topics, and followed his Twitter. I haven’t picked up one of his books yet, but I have been reading his blog. He likes to cover controversial topics and sticks to his guns without shame. I think the best part of that is reading the comments–all of them insightful, and bringing up debate over such topics as Taking the Lord’s Name in Vain.

The main post that caught my attention, while mostly referring to the Christian genre, is Why You Should Review Books You Don’t Like. I think this can be applied to all genres and readers, because at the heart of the matter it focuses on the importance of honest, thought out reviews.

Read for the posts or the comment debates, but either way it’s educational. :D

Liliy is a Fangirl #17

Hey all!

Bit of a boring week actually. XD

Comics

I bought Detective Comics, Static Shock & Hawk & Dove #5, but I only read Hawk & Dove–which gets its own post. XD I’ll get to the other two by next week though. I’m still interested I was just distracted by…

Games

Skyrim: Good lord this game is as addicting as everyone says it is. o_O The first time I played it a couple months ago, I played for like a solid eight hours. It was amazing. But I really, suck at this game, so I can only play with someone (my brother) next to me to steal the controller every once in a while.

I tend to get lost…

Anyway, I’m rocking’ the Dark Elf and loving Destruction Magic and Two-Handed (BATTLE AX). It’s awesome.

And I’m a little obsessed with jewelry in this game. MWA HA HA HA HA. *plays with her circlets*

Plants vs Zombies: I love this game. Though I hate the pool levels. XD *hugs her sunflowers*
