Hawk & Dove #5

And it’s that time again! Hawk and Dove Issue #5, which happens to be the last issue written by Sterling Gates. As of next month, Liefeld is going solo with both the writing & art (well, solo as accompanied by his awesome inkers and colorists).

Not even going to try this time–expect spoilers all the way to the end of the issue with this one.

Hawk and Dove Walk Down The Street

This is my favorite panel in the entire series. I don't know why but this one frame of them strolling along is perfection.

Summary:

Hawk & Dove call up Madame Xanadu to seek help for Deadman, but she turns them down. She does, however, give them a tip off to where they can find him. Hawk and Dove hunt down a demon named Gob and rough him up for answers. Hawk and Dove get a few kicks in, and Gob wises up when he realizes that even Peaceful Dove is about to break his face in.

This happens to bother Hank quite a bit, and he pulls Dove aside out of costume for a heart-to-heart. He questions if Boston’s appearance in their lives is what’s causing Dove to go crazy–Deadman hurts the balance of their partnership, so to speak. Dove, naturally, gets rather peeved that Hank is even suggesting that she leave Boston and he relents to continue helping her get the guy back.

They find Condor, and realize that not only did he use up all of Boston’s magic, he also ate his parnter Swan (which naturally pisses off Hank). There’s a fight where he goes on about a Circle and the War Avatars and tries to eat Dove. She fights back, accompanied by a lovely corny speech about the power of Peace and her love for Boston. When she’s cut by Condor’s talon, she pulls the same weird light number she did with Swan back in issue three. Condor goes down, and Deadman is saved.

And then Deadman dumps Dove. End of Issue. I’ll get to that down below. XD

Swan and a captured Deadman

The only thing bad about Swan is that I didn't get more of her.

The Bad

Okay. I think this was the first issue where I really had some issues with the pacing (or at least stopped fangirling enough to admit the series has pacing issues). As much as everyone wants to hurry and get to the Batman arc, I think that this one deserved a little more time to flesh out. This issue could have easily been split up into two to give us a bit more details, history and set up for later arcs concerning the Avatars.

I don’t necessarily need to know a whole lot more about the War avatars and the “Circle” that Condor’s referring to (I get that we should leave some stuff for later), but it would have been nice to see a little more of the set up for Condor’s eating plans & Hawk and Dove tracking them down.

And as much fun as it was for Hank/Hawk to screw up Madame Xanadu’s name in his inner monologue, it would have been better to actually see Hawk & Dove go visit her/call her for info instead of just telling us they did it (and still keep that gorgeous spread of Hawk & Dove running after the Gob…those two pages were great.)

Power of Dove

Peace kicks some ass when it wants to.

My only other complaint would be Dove’s light show. Mostly because I had no idea what was going on with that. No, really–I want this to be explained later. If that happens every time she gets a cut, they might want to redo her costume in Kevlar or something.

The Good

Okay, pacing for this arc aside–this was definitely one of the best comics yet (Issue #2 still holding out for favorite). It had a lot of action, the artwork in particular was in top form.

Hank and Dawn Need To Talk

Oh Hank. XD

And I loved Hank’s little “you should break up and not even save him” speech. It was awkward and a little cruel (in an unintentional way, remember Hank’s not the brightest lightbulb), you can tell he’s been holding back about Deadman for a while. I don’t think Hank is interested in Dove romantically (yet), but he’s definitely got an over protective big-brother thing going on that I think is darling. Plus, it’s nice to see them out of costume period. They’ve been in “uniform” pretty much non stop since Swan and Condor crashed the party at the White House, so it’s nice to remember Hank and Dawn are under the Hawk and Dove.

Deadman and Hawk

The only time they've agreed on anything ever. (In reference to Dove's light show.)

And of course there were the little things, too. For example, Hawk & Deadman’s reaction to Dove taking out Condor by her lonesome.

After they’ve both spent issues making it clear they can’t stand each other, that one little moment of fellowship was all the more sweeter.

Which leads us to the last issue:

The Break Up

Alright, the first read through, this seemed like it happened way too fast. “Wait! Hank was just talked about them breaking up and now they are!? I call BS!”

Until I put the issue aside and thought about it–and then decided I was really glad I had picked up Justice League Dark for a few issues.

In Justice League Dark, it was pretty clear that Dove and Deadman were on the rocks with their relationship. In the last issue I read with her in it (#2), she was storming out pissed off at him for continuing to try and jump her with other people’s bodies. It occurred to me, that this is what he probably wanted to talk about when he showed up in the first issue asking if it was a bad time to talk.

Hawk comforts Dove

Inside, Hank is jumping up and down in glee. He never liked that guy. XD

And it was never a good time. Deadman’s probably been wanting to have a serious discussion about their relationship since Issue #1 and has been interrupted by just about everything, including his own kidnapping–where as he said–he had plenty of time to think.

So, while it seemed sudden, after I put it into context, Deadman breaking up with Dawn seemed to fit and was a fairly logical course of action.

What does this mean for Hawk and Dove? Not sure, but now they’re both single and that makes me happy. *cough get them together cough*

Will Deadman continue to be a sore spot? Most likely. Either way, none of that matters because Issue #6 is a crossover with Batman.

What more do you really need to hear? :D

Liliy is an Author #8

So, the past two weeks were highly unproductive for me.

I spent nearly all my time reading South Park fanfiction (don’t look at me like that, the week before I left for vacation I did nothing but watch South Park on the official site and I craved more of it despite my lack of internet connection…) and watching the Food Network (I love you Iron Chef).

Writing wise, I think I edited two pages of Children of Hephaestus. To quote Big Mac: “Yup.”

But! Christmas and New Year’s are over and it’s back to work for me! Sadly, I only managed to get work done on Jupiter (About 1500 words?), and the second Book of the Candlemaker’s Merman series (Which is currently sitting around 7500 words).

Unfortunately, this means I definitely dropped the ball on getting the editing of CoH’s draft 2 finished by the end of December. My new goal is January the 14th. *rolls up sleeves*

…wish me luck. Seriously. I’m going to need it.

Liliy is a Fangirl #16

Hey! Back from vacation and ready and rarin’ to go! Long one today! :D Though I really need to find a better way to organize some of these…I might try using lists or something. We’ll see–but for now, the usual:

Movies

Once Upon a Brother’s Grimm:

Dean Jones and Paul Sand Singing

Dean Jones singing makes me ridiculously happy.

If you haven’t heard of this movie, it came out in 1977 and stars Dean Jones & Paul Sand. When I was little, I ate this movie up. You don’t even understand. So, during a WaM ustream, the topic of fairy tales came up and then Grimm stories and this movie came back to the front of my mind like smack to the face.  So I checked Amazon and realized it had a DVD release. Joy came.

Teri Garr as the Frog Princess

Teri Garr as the Frog Princess (One of my Dad's favorite actresses!)

I watched it twice in a row. There’s just something amazing about a cheesy, funny musical. It makes me laugh and even the old special effects have their own charm. I forgot how much fun that little fuzzy line around obvious blue screen effects could be.

Why do I really love it, though? Easy. Jones & Sand are hysterical. The rest of the cast is hysterical (even better–my mother walked in during the movie and recognized all the actors, since they were all big stars when she was in high school). The songs are ridiculously catchy and the costume design is fabulous (No, seriously–I’ve remembered the costumes from this movie even from when I was little watching on my recorded VHS tapes–they’re amazing). I even have a love for the very obvious stage sets.

The movie’s charming and I love it. If you can get a copy of the DVD I highly recommend it. :D

South Park: Yeah, so I’m really, really behind the curve- but I finally saw South Park: Bigger, Longer & UnCut. Loved it. That is all.

Cartoons

South Park: I’ve been on a South Park Binge lately. Not denying it. I love Kyle, Stan & Kenny. That is all…again.

Comics

So, trying to sit down and sort out my comics spending. So I might actually start dropping and picking up series depending how much I want to read them. I caught up today with the ones I cared about…and I finally get to start listing issue numbers since…I’m behind on a few series. Yay!

Aquaman #3: Mera & Arthur are still one of the greatest super hero power couples ever. Even when they’re just sitting around listening to someone talk about a creature from beneath the deep. Winning line of the issue? “He lives in a lighthouse.”

Dick and Bruce Quip

Why do I love you in every comic but your own, Dick? WHY?

Batman #4: Still by far one of the best series of the new DC 52. The art is fantastic and the Owl themed villain is getting more and more interesting. I wasn’t all that interested in Talon at first, but he’s starting to grow on me.

I also happen to love how Dick Grayson has been portrayed in this series. He always gets a chuckle from me.

The best part of this issue though (aside from the riddle at the end), was the flash back to young Bruce. Seriously man, Bitty!Bruce was hardcore. Such a little dedicated cutie. XD

Catwoman #4: The last page won me over. The issue was a little slow, mostly background and catching up–but the last few pages introducing a new Meta antagonist and well… Selina sums it up with “Crap.”

Flash #3: The artwork continues to be the highlight of this series. Love it. Little too much going on in this issue though, I found myself skimming a bit. Though, it does kind of makes sense considering Flash himself has a million things going on at once. So, it sort of works.

Justice League Dark #3: I have no idea who most of these people are save for Zatana and Deadman due to his connection to Dove. Makes for fun reading. XD

Roy and Jason in a Bar

I love them. So much. They may replace Tim & Conner as my favorite DC Bromance.

Red Hood and the Outlaws #4: Okay. This series is still rocking my world. Love it. Love it. Love it. Roy and Jason are totally ruling their bromance all over the place and I love it. (Have I mentioned I love this series?) Roy Harper is still stealing the show though. His little intro about being an alcoholic and Jason being his only friend were endearing and made me love him more. Jason is still being a total bad ass & Starfire? She’s still awesome. Starfire vs Crux was fun and I’m looking forward for them to continue.

The winning moment of the issue had to be Roy’s latest nickname for Jason: “Jaybird” That is win. So much win. <3

Supergirl and Mr. Tycho

I love you Mr. Tycho. I hope you and Supergirl clash for many issues to come.

Supergirl #4: This series is the only one competing with Hawk & Dove and Red Hood. I love it. I’ve never been this big of a fan of Supergirl in my life.

And Mr. Tycho is definitely one of the best villains to come into the DC. If he existed before, I will need to look him up.

But no, Kara was kicking some butt all over the place and there was a heartfelt moment here or there with Tycho’s mooks. I really can’t wait for the next issue and to see if Kara gets back together with Superman. Favorite line? It’s in the image to your left: “…that’s gonna be expensive.”

Teen Titans #3 & #4: I was going to stay a week behind on this series, but it’s so tied in with  Superboy I felt like I needed to catch up.

Awesome. These two issues were way better than the first two–way more action was happening that was interesting. I loved Bart’s two page spread of his speeding around, as well as Tim doing some great undercover work. The group’s finally an item and we’re treated to some awesome Young Justice (the 90’s series, not the new one) bickering. It’s great.

And we’ve finally got the last new member: Miguel aka Bunker. He is so much fun. XD

Miguel and Tim

Miguel and Tim -- Gotta' love the happy ones...even if he probably is scaring Tim.

I have a feeling I’m going to love Miguel. He’s well…he’s happy–which is something this group needs. Plus, I have serious weakness for gratuitous Spanish. Actually, I’m liking all of the new guys: Skitter is fun now that she’s talking & Solstice is spunky.

Plus, Bart and Tim are back together. Finally. Bart and Tim bickering was great. When Bart steals Tim’s clothing at the end of issue #4 I was dying of laughter.

All we need now is Superboy on board and I’ll get my power trio back. Young Justice made me adore the Conner/Tim/Bart trio and it needs to going again. *waits patiently for Superboy vs Wondergirl to come to a close*

And I think that wraps things up. I’m sure you’ve noticed I’ve dropped Superman & Nightwing…I’ll get back to them…Eventually.

Liliy is an Author #7

Hello again! My crazy December continues. It’s been wreaking havoc on my comic, WaM, but so far writing hasn’t been too deterred.

The Candlemaker’s Merman

I finished the rough, rough, rough draft of the first book in the series. It’s sitting around 19,000 words, and I figure it’ll hit a nice 30,000 once I fill out the barebones plot with some lovely character development. The beta readers have it at the moment, so I look forward to their feedback before I start digging in too deep.

In the meantime, I’ve started book two, and it has about 2,000 words to its name. And speaking of progress, I had a lovely chat with my brother and I think we came up with some plots for later books. So yay!

I really like this series–it gives me the same sort of joy I get writing WaM, so I want to do it right. That means no slip-ups in the release schedule that I start…so you get to wait longer for the books to start coming out, but after that, they should come out on the intended schedule.

Now if I could only figure out what I want the schedule to be…how long do you mind waiting between short  novellas in a continuing series? (That’s reasonable…don’t say a book a week, or I’ll have to have a buffer of about what? ten to twenty books before you even get one… XD).

Children of Hephaestus 2: Jupiter

18,000 words out of the intended 120,000k. Not bad. Honestly not much to report on this front. I’ll probably stop mentioning it unless something big happens. XD

Children of Hephaestus

Editing is my Achilles heel. I can write like a hare, but I edit like a tortoise. I had four hours of a car ride with nothing to do but edit and I still only managed to mark up three chapters.

Must find a faster way to read out loud and edit at the same time…

Especially since I don’t intend to even start releasing Candlemaker until this one is out. :D *thumbs up*

Author Blog Post

I haven’t been reading much lately, but I just opened up this blog post to read…at this very moment. We can read it together! XD

How Much Should an Ebook Cost? From Seth Godin at The Domino Project.

Liliy Is A Fangirl #15

Today’s review is full of spoilers everywhere for just about everything. I also had to write this pretty quick, so expect a typo or two. Fair warning. XD

Games

Watch this:

Did you watch it? Good.

*breathes*

SQUEE. That was flippin’ GRIMLOCK.

War for Cybertron is quite possibly one of the best games I’ve ever played, and it has everything to do with the fact it is FULL of Transformers stuff from every single generation all merged together in this true to the Transformers feeling game of awesome. *breathes* And then I see the trailer for the sequel and it’s just gone baby. I’m on the verge of pre-ordering a game that’s over a year out because-damn.

That was Bruticus in the trailer. Bruticus! And Grimlock. And…and…the song! That I bought! And. I can’t even breathe. I squealed like a little girl who was just got told she was visiting Cinderella’s Castle (okay, so maybe that was just me–but I freaking love the Disney Princesses).

I can not wait for this game. Expect me to be playing through War of Cybertron a few more times this year. XD

Comics

Deathstroke #4: I don’t even think I can comment on the entire issue just because of the last scene. *twitch* But I’ll give it a go.

Cristoph Feels Old

He's got a point, Slade.

So we start out with Slade giving orders, blah blah blah, and Cristoph points out that he’s not in his twenty’s anymore and is having a hard time keeping up. It helped reinforce that Cristoph has been my favorite character since this series started, if only because he knows Slade well enough that he can well, gripe to him. How many people do you know who could complain and whine after seeing Slade kill a dozen people with ease on a highway, or pull off the jail thing at the beginning of this one?

And, to reinforce that even further, Slade takes it pretty well and gives Cristoph some time off. Literally, not time off as in ‘you’re dead,’ but time off that shows concern & promises a real, relaxing vacation. Awesome all around.

Slade Gives Cristoph Time Off

Yeah, I'd be asking that too, Cristoph.

Slade visits Peabody and finds out that the thing in the box is his son Grant’s mask & Grant might be alive and blah blah blah, Slade goes off to fight some Blackhawks for info. The original Ravager coming back? I can’t tell what I feel about that. All I know is if Grant comes back, we better get Joseph, too–because it would be a whole lot of fun to get the whole Wilson clan back together.

And then this happens:

Hello Cristoph

NOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!

After this scene, the guest proceeds to stab Cristoph in the eye with a knife. He dies (presumedly). Why. WHY!? It’s only been four issues! Why is my favorite character dying already!? I know it’s going to happen eventually because that always happens to my favorite character but why now? *sobs*

The only way I will accept this is if Slade pitches a fit over Cristoph’s death. And I don’t mean a little ‘Oh, they’ll pay for messing with my stuff,’ I mean a full out ‘They killed one of my only friends and I’m going to hunt them down one by one!’ fury. *breathes*

Or he could have survived and now gets a nice eye patch to match Slade and the rest of the one-eyed Wilson clan. I’ll work with either.

Superboy #4: There was an issue of Superboy this week? XD

Ha ha, no. It was a calm reflective issue over Superboy taking a day off to cause trouble around the city while he thought about himself. Sort of the slow burn that Supergirl’s been up to lately, so it was nice.

I will say one thing though, the art in this issue went straight through the roof. Flat out gorgeous in every panel. R.B. Silva, Rob Lean & Richard Horie seriously outdid themselves. Awesome combination of players to create some of the prettiest artwork I’ve seen yet in the DC 52.

Superboy Fight

Love it.

The Power of Shazam #6-12: This series really picked up. Loved it. XD I might give The Power of Shazam it’s own little plug sometime. There’s a lot to cover. (*cough* Black Adam *cough*)

And that’s it for me. XD
